Apple’s latest iPhone 17 Pro is under scrutiny following reports of visible marks on demo units at Apple Stores. The issue has sparked widespread discussion online, with some users dubbing it ‘scratchgate’.

Apple responded to the reports, clarifying that the marks on display devices are not scratches. According to 9to5Mac, the blemishes result from material transfer from worn MagSafe stands used in retail locations. The company stated these marks can be removed with standard cleaning, and stores are replacing affected stands. Older iPhone models have reportedly exhibited the same display pattern.

Durability assessments have also focused on the camera bump edges. Popular reviewer JerryRigEverything noted that the edges surrounding the camera plateau appear more susceptible to minor abrasions. Apple explained that these sections are constructed from anodized aluminium, similar to previous iPhone models and MacBooks. While resilient, the edges may exhibit normal wear over extended use.

Overall, tests indicate the iPhone 17 series maintains strong durability. The new Ceramic Shield 2 front panel demonstrates enhanced resistance to scratches compared to prior models. Even the ultra-thin iPhone Air has proven robust in bending and scratch evaluations. Outside the camera plateau, the iPhone 17 Pro shows minimal susceptibility to everyday wear.

Apple’s move from titanium to aerospace-grade 7000-series aluminium in the iPhone 17 Pro has added benefits beyond aesthetics. The new frame improves heat dissipation, enhances battery efficiency, and supports a streamlined unibody design. Reviewers report that after two weeks of daily and heavy usage, both the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max retain a like-new appearance.

Industry experts note that Apple’s focus on both performance and material durability may set a benchmark for future smartphone releases, even as minor concerns like surface marks draw temporary attention.
